North starts by declaring 2♠ on hand 1. She takes 10 tricks, and gets a trick score of 60 (30 × 2) for making the contract and a bonus of 60 (30 × 2) for the two overtricks. Had North-South bid to 4♠, they would have completed a game.
For hand 2, West is declarer at 4♥. He takes 10 tricks. East-West get 120 (30 × 4) trick points for making their contract. They get no bonus points. They complete the game in one hand, so a thick line is drawn. East-West are now vulnerable. North-South get to keep all 120 points that they made, but to make a game they need 100 new points.
For hand 3, West is declarer again, this time at 2♥. He takes 8 tricks. East-West get 60 (30 × 2) trick points for making their contract. They get no bonus points. They now have 60 points toward their second game. East-West are still vulnerable. North-South are still non-vulnerable.
For hand 4, South is declarer at 3♦. She takes 11 tricks. North-South get 60 trick points for their 3-level contract in a minor suit (20 × 3) and 40 = (20 × 2) bonus points for the two overtricks. Note that the 60 from hand 1 and the 60 from this hand don't combine, because West completed a game for his side in between.
For hand 5, East is declarer at 2NT. He takes 9 tricks. East-West get 70 (40 + 30) trick points for making their contract. They get 30 bonus points. They now have 130 points toward their second game.
East-West win the rubber bonus of 700 points for winning two games to none. East-West have a total of 980 to North-South's 220. If North-South had bid higher, they would have won the rubber 920 to 60. A big swing that shows why it is important to bid higher. It will also help to understand why bidding is so focused on finding game contracts that can be made.
